That is why I started the blood donation challenge last year. Everyone when they heard I got sick signed up for One Match (which is another great cause) but didn't know how important blood donations were to our healthcare system. The challenge not only raised awareness but a lot of blood was donated in the process and many people were converted into donors.
The time has come when I need to call on all our your compassion and support once again.
When I was going both my transplant and initial chemotherapy stints in the hospital I was both the youngest person in the leukemia hospital wards and the only person being treated for my form of the disease. You see most of the patients in Princess Margaret were being treated for AML whereas I have another form called ALL. I won't go into all the specifics but basically AML mainly affects older people, with the average age being 65.
So you may be asking yourself if I was the only one with ALL staying in one of the biggest leukemia wards in North America, where was everyone else. Unfortunately, the answer to that is a little sad; ALL is a disease that primarily affects children. There is probably no worse thought than I can think of than a child going through what I have been through over the past year and half. It would not only be devastating but would steal their innocence and youth.
There is a cause that fights to stop this loss of innocence; all children with cancer under the age of 18 are treated at the specific children's hospitals. During their treatment their parents and families need a place to stay. This is where the Ronald McDonald House comes in. They help the families by providing them with places to stay when their children need them the most. This to me is so important because I know first hand how lonely treatment can be, and how important having loved ones close is. This charity provides this semblence of normalcy to children so the disease and treatment doesn't destroy their childhood.
This Sunday my sister is doing a walk-a-thon in support of the Ronald McDonald House in Hamilton. I am sorry to put out this post so late and with so little time but they really do need our support. So anything you can give in support of this great cause would be greatly appreciated.
The link to support the walk-a-thon is right here:

Anything you have, even one dollar would go a long way to helping make sure this terrible disease and many others like it don't go on destroying children's childhood.
