It got me thinking what does it really take to have a successful harvest? Well first it takes the farmers a great deal of work just to get the crops out of the field, but there is is so much prep work before hand. From the moment the seeds are planted into the earth, work is being done to ensure that months later they reap their rewards of a great harvest. I would imagine the main focus of their early work is to create a strong root system for their plants. These plants aren't like the ones in our gardens that get pampered with nice soil, sunlight, and constant watering. These are exposed to all the elements, and without healthy roots they would just get defeated but the constant barrage of pressure mother nature places on them.
We are not much different than the plants in the farmer's field. Our parents spend countless hours when we are young and growing up developing our "roots" so when we become exposed to the pressures of the world we are capable of surviving and thriving. It makes you wonder though, why as we grow up are we not as focused on these "roots". We spend more time worrying about how the future is going to look and how we are going to get through the pressures of the present without stopping to think we should also be strengthening our roots. Just like the plants in the farmer's fields, the strengthening of roots isn't a one time affair but a constant in the life of the plant.
This past couple weeks I have been guilty of focusing too much on the present day problems and future. This two year journey is a long one and I found myself looking out towards the future a lot. Additionally, as you know I had been battling one of life's storms with the last battle with GVHD. These two things combined really took me away from focusing on what keeps my roots so strong. Sure my future "harvest" looks bountiful, and it is important to overcome this present storm but if I am not investing in my "roots" I will never reap that bountiful future.
Over thanksgiving weekend I took the time to get back to my roots and get some balance back. My next post will take you on that journey :)
Do you ever find yourself focusing too much on the present and future, disregarding your root system? What do you do to re-balance?
