A Walk to the Pier

I first wanted to start today's post with some pretty exciting news.  My story has been published on the Canadian Cancer Society's Webpage.  Check it out http://convio.cancer.ca/site/News2?news_iv_ctrl=-1&id=23135

Last year before I went into the hospital for my transplant Friday's were my Friday Photos where I would share my favorite photos from the week.  Now that the weather is warming up and I am getting out walking again with my camera I am going to start back up my Friday Photos.
Yesterday I went for a walk down to the mouth of the Credit River and here are my favorites.

I hope you liked them.  Would love to hear your thoughts!

A Call For Help To My Wonderful Readers!

The foundation for the strength behind any person lies in their support system they have built around them.  For me I was a wonderfully supportive foundation in all of you, my readers, that has enabled me to be so successful in my recovery.

Today I am calling on the help of all you magnificent readers to help me achieve a personal goal.  My personal goal was to achieve 200 email subscription readers by April 1 and we are so very close.  Why am I calling on each of you you may ask? Because collectively our network is much bigger than mine alone.

It is not a big ask, if you really enjoy reading my blog or find inspiration in it, I know that a couple people you know will probably also find the same thing.  Please encourage them to sign up for the email subscription to begin receiving the blog's messages as well.  You can even encourage them to get people to sign up if they like what the read  :)

It only will take each person influencing a few people each and we can collectively achieve this goal.

So please help me achieve my goal and make my Day +100 a shining success :)

PS today was a double post day so don't forget to check the first post on continueing our journey on positivity.

If anyone has any comments about the email goal or techniques they might have for influencing please feel free to share

Perspective - the 2nd Key To Positivity

My Morning Breakfast
I started a series last week discussing how to remain positive during the smaller difficulties we face in life.  A few weeks ago I shared my steps on remaining positive when we are faced with life altering challenges in our lives but in this series I wanted to show that the same principles could be applied for the smaller difficulties we may face.
To help illustrate this theory I have been discussing how I have kept a positive attitude while going through the “self imposed” prison of recovering from my bone marrow transplant.  Our first step, as discussed, in last weeks post was that you must make peace with the difficulties in your life.  By this I don’t mean you must achieve overall peace in your life, you just need to accept your situation before you can move forward.
Once we have made peace with our situation we can move onto the second step, gaining Perspective.  This step can take a little self reflection and soul searching but it is a very worthwhile exercise to undertake.  By adding perspective to our situation we can reduce the magnitude of the situation.  We often have a tendency to blow our negative situations way out of proportion, and feel that they are much worse than they really are.  Gaining perspective in our situation counteracts this and brings us back to a more realistic view of our current situation.
For me my perspective came doing some reflection on the past year while laying in bed one night getting ready to fall asleep.  I realized that I was lucky to be lying there still alive.  In the past year I have basically been brought right to my deathbed in my treatments twice and I got through them.  A lot of people aren’t as fortunate as I have been in surviving  both these deadly treatments.  And to top it off, I achieved the ultimate goal of full remission.
By looking at this this way, my perspective on my current situation changed drastically.  I was no longer living in a prison, but walking through a dark cave.  Instead of the cave being all dark, there was a tiny light in the distance which I realized is my exit.  My ability to change perspectives and appreciate the situation I am currently in made me realize that I am on the road out of the cave; with each passing day I take another step closer to the light and exit.
Taking the time to alter our perspective during a difficult time can be a tough process of self examination and reflection, but trust me it is well worth it.  To achieve a change in perspective you don’t always have to go deep within yourself, you can find your inspiration in others as well to help alter your perspective.
I maintain the attitude that no matter how bad a situation is, there is always someone going through something tougher.  So if you are having a hard time altering your perspective through self reflection, try and draw strength from others and how they are dealing with their difficult situations.
Once we have altered the perspective we have towards our difficult situation we can move on to the third step in maintaining our positive outlook, and the topic of the next post in this series, Passion in our lives.

My Weekly Update

Health Update
Yesterday I had my check-up with my doctor.  Everything has been coming along nicely with regards to my health over the past few weeks and it continued this past week.  My GVHD continued to stay under control despite the taper we did last week.  Since my GVHD has stayed under control the doctor started another taper on my steroids and reduced my dose to 100mg.  It is crazy to think only a few weeks ago I was on 200mg per day!  The other great news was it was made permanent that I only have to go once a week to the hospital for checkups, as long nothing goes wrong with my health of course.
Personal Update
Not too much to update on the personal front.  The reduction in steroids has reduced the peppiness that comes along with high dose steroids.  As a result, I have been sleeping much more over the past week which has kept me away from writing.  I end up needing some pretty lengthy naps each day.  I have decided that I am going to try and walk everyday now.  I think by getting back to exercising it will help build back up my energy levels and rebuild all the cells that were destroyed during my transplant.  In addition, I can tell the steroids have really started to eat away the muscles away in my legs as they get tired very easily these days.  When I went through my chemo cycles last year and I added exercise to my routine, although it was hard at the beginning, it really made a difference so I using the same strategy.  The walks will help rebuild the strength in my body and allow me to just start enjoying the beginning of spring on the waterfront.  I got out for my first walk on Monday afternoon.  The weather was actually beautiful and it felt great to get outside.  I brought my camera but didn’t get too many pictures, I need to work on getting my creative eye back J
Well that is all of the update for this week, told you it wasn’t as big as usual J
